Gotham Central--the "Cop"tic Stitch

The coptic stitch is a fun little stitch that can be a little complicated. First I poked six holes in the front and back covers. 

Then I poked holes in each signature (comic issue) to align with the holes in the book board.

Can't really see in this image, but in the spine, I have poked 6 holes

Then the sewing begins. I sewed the front cover to the first signature (issue #12).

This binding is designed to show off the coptic stitch.

But I want to cover it up with tape.

I will use the gray paper to cover up the tails of the tape.

By cutting the gray paper into single strips, I will cover up the ends of the tape...

For once, I was able to take the image in my head and make it tangible.

Gotham Central--the Endpapers

Okay. So where did we leave off? I'd just glued the book cloth onto the boards. Next step is to glue the endpapers to the other side of the book board.

First I cut the end papers to the size I need (using my trust dusty cutting board, ruler, and box cutter). The endpapers are the same size as the comic book, just slightly smaller than the book board. I chose a dark gray for the endpapers to compliment the dark and gritty tone of Gotham.

Then glue.

And press the end paper onto the book board.

Ta~da!

Next time: the Coptic Stitch...Wow, I just realized how appropriate the stitch I chose for this comic about the police. "Cop"tic. I did not plan that. Really.

Gotham Central--Don't Judge a Book…oh, you know

Covers:

First I had to cut the book board to the right size. Just a smidge bigger than the comics themselves.

Actual dimensions: 7 1/4" x 10 3/4"

Next, I trimmed the book cloth and pasted it onto the book board. 

I decided to go with black book cloth for the covers. Cause, well, it's Batman. 

Not only does the black look sleek and matches the darkness and grittiness of Gotham City, but it's going to look great with the Caution Tape. I plan to get some Police Do Not Cross Tape and have it wrap around the book starting on the front cover, wrapping around the spine to the back cover. In my head it looks amazing. 

Stay tuned to see if I can pull it off.

Gotham Central--Destroy All Ads

Comics are filled with ads. I get it. To keep comic prices low, ads were another way to make money. And some of the ads are neat--showing upcoming comic lines, toys for Teen Titans or Batman the Animated Series. But the ads slow down the action and interrupt the dramatic moments. So the really annoying ones have to go.

Ads come in different forms, each needing a special way to destroy it.

1. Some pages I can rip right out because there's an ad on the front and back.

2. And some are two-page spreads which can be glued together.

3. The third type of ad has comic on the back side. I can't rip that out! But usually there is a another ad on the next page. So I rip out (carefully using a ruler and x-acto knife) the one page, flip it and paste it down on the other ad. That way the ads are covered up and the story can continue uninterrupted.

4. And lastly, there are ads with comic on the back but no other nearby ad to cover up like in step 3. For these ads, I plan to draw something related to the series and paste it over these ads.
